Concert review:
The concert was at the Rio theatre a small indie movie theatre that occasionally does shows. I arrived 10 minutes before doors, but because people were kept in the lobby until it started, I managed to get a good spot, 1 spot behind the stage.
First up was Andy Shauf. He played electric acoustic and sung mostly sad songs, that were very much in a story tale format. He has a strange voice, but its strangely melodic too. His vocals were captivating. Everyone was silent when he played. The funniest thing about Andy Shauf, was what he said between songs. Most people when they’re awkward, its weird and uncomfortable with him it was hillarious. He’d start a question not knowing where it would end up and at the end it would be funny. XD
Up next was Leif Vollebekk, a folk/blues/bluegrass/etc artist. He played on guitars or piano. He was kind of weird. He had some odd mannerisms, but this guy was really, really good. This isn’t the type of music I listen to often, but he’s really skilled with that guitar. He did a few covers including Ray Charles and Sigur Ros (complete with the icelandic lyrics).
Aidan Knight was up finally. He put on a great show. Good vocally, and backed up by a drummer, guitars/viola/bass, keyboardists and trumpeters. Songs varied from very folk-rock tunes to songs so quiet you could hear a pin drop. It was captivating to be there.
Inbetween sets, Aidan would talk, and upon hear him talking he just seemed like such a cool guy. He’d tell life stories, make jokes, and he was so humble. He’s the type of guy that when he speaks you just want to be good friends with him.
He said he wasn’t used to playing in nice venues like this because usually he has to deal with drunken idiots at bars and that he’s not used to encores. He deserves it all. He’s fantastic and a very canadian artist. I know he’ll go far.
Afterwards I managed to get a setlist, bought a few CD’s, and managed to talk to Aidan and get my setlist and ticket signed (along with a photo with him).
Please see him if you can. His first album Versicolour is great, and the new album released this week, Small Reveal is really, really good. I encourage you to check his music out or see him live if you get a chance.
