So now I’ll tell you guys all about it.
WARNING LOCAL POLITICS AHEAD. :P
Essentially the reason for this protest is that over the years BC Ferries, a corporation that is run by the BC government has become privatized. It has been mismanaged; fares are going up ridiculous amounts (say 100-300% in 10 years) which is forcing people off the island and coastal communities that they live on. They just can’t afford to live here anymore when its so expensive. The ferries in these communities (including mine, Denman Island) is the only way off of the island so its a big deal.
In addition to this they’ve become corrupt giving away massive bonuses to management WHILE the fares are increasing astronomically. They are also not consulting with local communities at all.
AND now they’re cutting service to routes across this province, which will devastate whole communities.
The fare hikes are leading to decreased ridership which is making the ferries lose money, and this is making a big dent in the tourism in these areas, some depend on tourism almost entirely.
A lot of people are increasingly getting pissed with this company. And today it culminated in this rally at the BC legislative building in Victoria, BC.
The government is not listening to us or our concerns. They call themselves liberals but they’re quite right wing.
There were lots of great speakers from youth, young mothers, the BC Ferries Union, Native groups and more along with music.
I will also be posting a photoset in a few minutes on tumblr.
The protest was great. I had a good time. Elizabeth May, one of my favourite politicians spoke there too and she was AMAZING. Lots of other good speakers too.bc bc ferries protest british columbia canada me rally civil disobedience canadians politics cdnpoli bcpoli canadian politics
There is something instantly relaxing about being surrounded by nature. Tiny little birds flicking between giant evergreen trees chirping as they pass.
I missed this.
bc ferries bc british columbia canada ferry I'm from Denman Island AKA 304% increase in fares in 10 years ridiculous!
"I’m enjoying this playing for a crowd thing. I’m from Ontario and I don’t get that often."
